Permanently Erase Files

January 21st, 2008 by The Editor

Did you know that under most circumstances, deleting a file in Windows doesn’t actually remove its contents? In reality, you are only deleting the references to that file in the file system. If you’re running with the Recycling Bin active (default), deleting a file simply moves it to special hidden folder. So what happens if you want to permanently delete a file so that it is truly erased from your hard drive?

In this situation you need a file eraser. Most file erasing utilities work the same way, they repeatedly write random information to the area that’s being erased. You can adjust the amount of security you prefer by changing the number of passes the software makes. I currently use Eraser by Heidi Computers. which can erase data from a hard drive in most of the circumstances you will typically encounter. Securely erasing a file is as easy as right-clicking it. Eraser is available for 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Windows 2003 Server and DOS, and is freeware.
